Dad served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Battleship USS California, 7th Fleet of the Pacific Theatre. He was an Ammunitions Handler on a five-inch gun mount. The California and 6 other battleships performed extensive minesweeping operations off the South China coast. I think dad had Pals, a form of ALS. His legs and ankles became extremely stiff and he had trouble walking and later swallowing, talking and moving his fingers. His mind remained sharp but he worked hard to perform daily tasks. Still he wanted to be as independent as possible. Dad lived to be 92.
