In September 1998, Don was diagnosed with Bulbar Onset ALS and they attended a support group provided by the Arizona Chapter of the ALS Association. That was the beginning of Millie and Don’s education about Lou Gehrig’s Disease. Don lived a little more than 16 months and died in February of 2000. After his death Millie moved back to her home town of Jackson, Ohio.
In 2002 Millie contacted The ALS Association Central and Southern Ohio Chapter and started attending a support group in Dayton. In 2004, at the request of the Chapter Events Associate, she organized the first Dayton Walk to Defeat ALS. This volunteer effort with no budgeted funds raised nearly $20,000. In 2008, Millie became a board member and served as Board President beginning in 2010. During her tenure as President, the Chapter Board had a review and update of the By-Laws and led the development of a 3-year Strategic Plan (FY 2014-2017), which fit into the Continuous Improvement Program which was being considered at the time.
Millie has been a member of the Board of Representatives, both as an alternate or voting representative. She is currently serving her sixth year on the Board of Trustees and has served on both the Chapter Relations and Care Services Committee.
