Every year, skiers on Team ALS go to the American Birkebeiner (the premier cross-country ski race in North America) in honor of John Jaeckel, who is living with ALS, and all other Wisconsin residents battling the disease.
There is no cost for skiers to participate, we request that Team ALS members raise at least $1000 toward the cause.
IN HIS WORDS: AJ Scholz, Team ALS Member
My name is AJ Scholz and I have been a member of Team ALS at the American Birkebeiner cross-country ski race for years.
Last year, with the difficult course, I was forced to drop out of the race around the 43K mark, which was a huge bummer. So against my better judgement, I decided that wasn't the way to go out and will be back this year doing the full 50K American Birkebeiner.
Which of course leads to the question, why do I keep doing this?
The hours of training, the cold, the 7+ hours it will take me to finish on race day. But the answer is simple. Through the support of my friends and family, I've raised thousands of dollars through this race for the Wisconsin Chapter of The ALS Association.
That's what keeps me coming back, keeps me motivated when I don't want to train and keeps my legs and arms churning on race day.
Thanks for your support past, present, and hopefully future.
-AJ
