Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act Passes Congress, Offering Critical Support for Veterans with ALS

We are proud to share that the Elizabeth Dole Home Care Act (H.R. 542/S. 141) has passed Congress and is now headed to President Biden for signature, another huge win for the ALS community.

This legislation will significantly improve access to in-home care for veterans living with ALS by raising the current cap on home care costs covered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).Under the new law, the VA will now pay up to 100% of the cost of home care services, matching or exceeding the cost of a nursing home.

The ALS Association and its advocates played a key role in advocating for the passage of this legislation. This year, ALS advocates sent over 17,000 messages to federal lawmakers nationwide in support of the Elizabeth Dole bill.

“This is a critical victory for veterans and their families who often face overwhelming financial burdens to maintain care at home,” said Denise Bailin, senior director of congressional affairs.

The ALS Association single-handedly championed the effort to have ALS included in this bill. Alongside partner organizations, we met with lawmakers to ensure the voices of veterans with ALS were heard loud and clear.”

We thank Congress for passing this vital act and recognize the tremendous impact it will have on the lives of our veterans living with ALS and their families. We remain committed to improving care and advancing legislation that improves the lives of all those living with this disease.
