ALS Canada-Brain Canada Trainee Program 2025
Funding Organizations: ALS Canada and Brain Canada Foundation
Description: The purpose of this program is to help nurture promising doctoral and post-doctoral trainees in the early stages of their careers, so they might strive to promote discovery and advancement. At the time of application, eligible doctoral trainees must have applied to, been accepted for, or be within the first three years of a Ph.D. program under the supervision of an investigator who holds an academic position at qualifying Canadian institution. Qualifying postdoctoral trainees must currently hold, or have secured a postdoctoral position under the supervision of an investigator who holds, an academic position at a qualifying Canadian institution.
Available Funding: $25,000/year for up to three years (Doctoral Awards) or $55,000/year for up to three years (Postdoctoral Fellowship Awards)

Phased Large Awards for Comparative Effectiveness Research
Funding Organization: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
Description: PCORI is seeking to fund proposals that address critical decisions faced by patients, caregivers, clinicians, and stakeholders across the health and health care community and for which there is insufficient evidence. The proposed trials should address critical decisional dilemmas that require important new evidence about the comparative clinical effectiveness of available interventions. They should also compare interventions that already have robust evidence of efficacy and are in current use.
Available Funding: Up to $22 million in total direct costs over an anticipated 6.5 years

Advancing the Science of Engagement in Research
Funding Organization: Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI)
Description: PCORI is seeking to fund studies that build an evidence base on engagement in research, including measures to capture structure/context, process, and outcomes of engagement in research; techniques that lead to effective engagement in research; and how effective engagement techniques should be modified and resourced for different contexts, settings, and communities to ensure equity in engagement and research.
Available Funding: Up to $1–1.5 million in direct costs over two or three years (depending on study type)

FTD Biomarkers Initiative Grants

Description: This initiative aims to advance diagnostic precision, improve early detection, and enhance patient outcomes by supporting innovative and impactful research projects focused on the discovery, validation, and/or development of scalable, accessible diagnostic tools to help screen and diagnose frontotemporal lobar degeneration disorders.
Available Funding: $250,000–$700,000 over up to two years

Addressing Rare Diseases

Description: This opportunity seeks to fund high-quality, patient-centered comparative clinical effectiveness research projects focused on rare diseases like ALS. PCORI is particularly interested in submissions that address approaches to symptom management, timely diagnosis, and improving care delivery for individuals with rare diseases.
Available Funding: Direct costs up to $12 million for up to 5 years
