How We Are Making a Difference
For every $1 we've awarded since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, our grantees have received $7 in follow-on funding from sources such as the National Institutes of Health, other philanthropic foundations, and other federal agencies.
Here is just some of the progress that has been made because of that funding:
More Treatments
- 6 new drugs and formulations approved in the last decade.
- Development of the first genetically targeted therapy for ALS.
-
Less time to go from genetic discoveries to therapeutic development.
More Research
- 150% more ALS publications over the last 10 years.
- Nearly double the number of ALS clinics trials since 2020.
- 80% of our grantees expand their ALS-focused research programs.*
- Attracted more than 280 new investigators to ALS research since 2023.
More Engagement
- 2,500+ people with ALS and caregivers who have shared their preferences, needs, and experiences through ALS Focus™ surveys.
- Twice yearly ALS Roundtable discussions that drive the development of initiatives to address our community's biggest needs and challenges.
More Participation
- 1 in 4 of our grantees take on graduate students and/or hire a postdoctoral researcher.*
- Increased diversity and participation in ALS clinical trials at 18 established and emerging trial sites.
*Based on a 2024 survey conducted by the nonprofit research institute RTI International.
Your belief in our project has provided us with more than just financial means, it has given us the opportunity to potentially transform a promising idea into a life-changing therapy.”
