Because of the generosity of our donors, we invest millions of dollars in ALS research every year. From pilot projects to global collaborations to our own in-house survey and ALS Roundtable programs, we are building hope and enhancing quality of life while accelerating the development of new treatments and technologies. 

We search the world over to find and fund ALS research with the greatest potential impact.

How We Are Making a Difference 

For every $1 we've awarded since the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, our grantees have received $7 in follow-on funding from sources such as the National Institutes of Health, other philanthropic foundations, and other federal agencies.

Here is just some of the progress that has been made because of that funding:

  • 6 new drugs and formulations approved in the last decade. 
  • Development of the first genetically targeted therapy for ALS. 
  • Less time to go from genetic discoveries to therapeutic development.

  • Nearly double the number of ALS clinics trials since 2020. 
  • 80% of our grantees expand their ALS-focused research programs.*  
  • Attracted more than 280 new investigators to ALS research since 2023.

  • 2,500+ people with ALS and caregivers who have shared their preferences, needs, and experiences through ALS Focus™ surveys. 
  • Twice yearly ALS Roundtable discussions that drive the development of initiatives to address our community's biggest needs and challenges.

  • 1 in 4 of our grantees take on graduate students and/or hire a postdoctoral researcher.* 
  • Increased diversity and participation in ALS clinical trials at 18 established and emerging trial sites.
