I never met Clyde. He died from ALS in 1956 at age 35. My husband was only six years old when he lost his father to this devastating disease. He had vivid memories of his father in an iron lung that shaped his decision making, when he too, was diagnosed with ALS at age 59. Is this familial, the military connection (both Clyde and Dan served), or merely bad luck? We may never know the answer, however, research needs to continue to find answers to the ALS puzzle for my children and future generations.
