Sam grew up in the tiny rural community of Eaton, Ohio. She attended the College of Dayton Interior Design Institute, and after she graduated, she married her high school sweetheart. They lived in Dayton, Columbus and Ft. Lauderdale - moves that were related to her husband's employment. She has two daughters and 3 grandchildren.
She moved to Chicago in 1988 and pursued a career with Child’s/Dryfus Group, a national interior design firm, and became Vice President of Business Development. The company specializes in model homes for homebuilders and developers throughout the United States. She met her second husband, Bill Maybrook, who was a partner in a large homebuilding company in Chicago. They were married for 18 years. Bill passed away from ALS after battling the disease for 4 1/2 years.
Sam has been involved with the Florida Chapter since 2012, working at both the Greater Tampa Bay Walk to Defeat ALS and the Ride to Defeat ALS. She has traveled to Washington DC to advocate for people living with ALS three times, and she currently runs the Next Chapter group in Tampa.
She is a member of The Tampa Theater, a Patron at The Tampa Museum of Art, and a member of Friends of The Museum.
