Former San Francisco 49ers receiver Dwight Clark, best known for his leaping catch in the end zone to help the 49ers win the 1982 NFC Championship game, announced on Sunday that he has ALS. Clark wrote a letter explaining his story, which you can read here. And here is a video of “The Catch.”

Clark won two Super Bowls in his nine seasons with the 49ers. He later went on to be the general manager of the team, as well as of the Cleveland Browns.

Clark’s letter was accompanied by numerous quotes from friends and former teammates, which you can read here.

Clark says his “ultimate hope is that eventually I can assist in finding a cure for ALS, which disrupts the lives of so many and their loved ones.” If he does, he would join other NFL greats, including Tim Shaw, Steve Gleason, O.J. Brigance, and others, whose own fights against ALS have served as inspiration for so many others.
